"I established Muslim Heritage Month in response to growing concerns about the increasing normalisation of anti-Muslim bias in Britain. Despite the existence of Islamophobia month, observed in November, I believed there was a need for an additional initiative that could indirectly confront anti-Muslim prejudice through a more celebratory and storytelling-oriented approach.
March 2024 marks the inauguration of Muslim Heritage Month. March has been chosen because the International Day to Combat Islamophobia adopted by the UN falls on 15th March. The aim is to then establish an annual tradition of celebrating and recognising the contributions and cultural richness of Muslims in Britain. The initiative also seeks to challenge negative stereotypes, foster improved understanding, and cultivate greater empathy and inclusion towards Muslim communities within the broader society.
The website serves as a centralised repository of information, bringing together a wealth of fantastic resources spanning the history of Muslims from the past to the present, particularly about Muslim history in Britain. I hope this facilitates easier access to this significant wealth of knowledge, showcasing the efforts of individuals and organisations dedicated to shedding light on Muslim heritage.
Making Muslim Heritage Month a success is not a task we can accomplish on our own. Your assistance is crucial; we invite you to actively engage in commemorating and encouraging others to participate as well. You can get involved now or start planning for March 2025. The initiative has the potential to have a significant and enduring impact if it is marked annually and there is active participation by Muslims and non-Muslims.
If you want to join us then please get in touch, we can send you Muslim Heritage Month placards for your event. Contact us on mhm@muslimheritagemonth.org.uk ”
